Hornby R3088 LNER Thompson Class 01 '3755' with TTS sound. 00 gauge.
Wartime 1940s work stained and weathered, with signs of recent workshop attention and casings cleaned. Fitted with Hornby DCC TTS sound in the tender. Hand painted crew and real coal, fire iron on tender. Smooth runner with sound.
This locomotive is sold as used but is virtually new, being old stock in a slightly shelf tired box in which it has spent most of its life; it runs superbly smooth, the chassis having running-in mileage only. The chassis has been fully serviced and tested before sale; the space inside the tender was Hornby pre-fitted for TTS sound to be installed, so full advantage has been taken to fit TTS sound using a Hornby 9F TTS sound decoder as a Thompson 01 TTS sound decoder was not available; the Thompson 01 and 9F have similar mechanical dimensions where the driving wheels and cylinders are concerned: Thompson 01 driving wheels were 4' 8" whereas 9F at 5' are close in rotational circumference on new steel tyres; the Thompson cylinders are (2) 20x26 whereas the 9F are (2) 20x28 and boiler pressures are Thompson 225 psi and the 9F is 250 psi. Traffic effort is similar too: Thompson 01 was 35,520 lb and the 9F 39,667 lb. The sound installation is neat and tidy within the tender, the sound emitting very clearly through the rose of holes in the tender base. It sounds very nice indeed, and is sold with Hornby 9F TTS instructions enclosed in the box, all other paperwork is in the box too. The detail pack has been fitted, and hand painted crew have been fitted, and a hand made fire iron from brass wire fitted to the tender top. Real coal in the tender. The Thompson 01 was a LNER wartime locomotive, the first appearing in 1944, so the decision was taken to depict 3755 in 1940s wartime condition, with much work and little cleaning, and that would have been the case right up to Nationalization in 1948 and beyond; except that some workshop attention has been carried out on the motion and the boiler casing above, as can be seen in that area on the locomotive. The weathering has been applied in great detail and care to provide a balanced and attractive finish to this freight workhorse.
