2/8/2023 Late News...Late news as in late; not deceased...although some of you may have thought that. Following my immune system's skirmish with Covid a period of long covid ensued; I know some people dispute the existence of long covid, mainly because they have never experienced Covid or if they had Covid they made a recovery without any protracted aftereffect. Medical research in America being better funded, and the results more readily available, clearly indicates physiological changes that have been discovered during autopsies carried out on Covid victims, and the results are quite illuminating. Covid is a sinister virus.
I have also had another protracted period of being on crutches due to recurrence of my spinal injury; this time it took two-months to heal sufficiently for me to become mobile again, and so delayed many of the retirement plans we had for 2023. So this year has turned out to be slower than anticipated in terms of getting things done - and the rain has not helped in the case of outdoor work: although we had success in the pressing tree surgery needs thanks to a wonderful young chap with the necessary skills. My studio internal refurbishment also took longer because thirty plus years of use found more needed than first thought, including plumbing and radiator upgrades; there is still a bit of wall painting to complete, but the studio should be fully operational by September. I am also taking some time out during August to visit the Severn Valley Railway, being a member of the SVR. Once the studio is operational again I plan to start work on some 0 gauge Leeds Model Company (LMC) that need restoration; this includes locomotives and rolling stock. I have also completed some new workshop facilities that will enable better and easier progress with the larger models that are really too big for my hitherto 00 gauge set up. These 0 gauge models have languished for far too long due to former work pressures; something I hope to now correct. Due to my ongoing hearing problems I have decided to limit first contact to email only, and have amended my Contact page accordingly. More to follow as time and progress allow. Ciao for now. Retirement is a process best eased into...
And it was going quite well until the energy price crisis took away the entire value of one of my monthly pension payments; I have had to close my studio because I cannot afford to run the gas boiler, the heat pump, and the general electric costs of the studio this winter; so the studio is mothballed until at least next springtime, the gas boiler is shut down and isolated, the water turned off and drained from the system; the first time in over thirty-years I have had to do this to get through the winter financially. As for the main house my wife and I are children of the 1950s and 60s so an absence of central heating was normal; the first house I occupied with radiators was in 1988, our plan is to fall back on the resilience of childhood, when you could scratch your name in the ice with your fingernail - that was on the inside of the bedroom window by the way - and revert to a simpler way of life; we got through winter then, even in 63 - although my father did have to pull me by my ankles out of a snowdrift, and we shall get through the winter now; although, I fear many will not, and death toll figures will no doubt be suppressed, and then leaked, and we shall see what the tabloids make of those figures next year. Perhaps the British people will then get the general election they deserve, and should already have had if politics had been honourable. Archives
